According to the American Academy of Allergy Asthma and Immunology, approximately 300 million people worldwide suffer from asthma. If you have asthma, exercise may make your symptoms worse, or you may exhibit symptoms only when you exercise. While you may be tempted to think you're just out of shape, asthma symptoms can lead to serious health risks if ignored. Recognizing asthma triggers can help you avoid health complications while exercising; contact your doctor if the symptoms become severe.

Coughing or Wheezing

Coughing and wheezing are the most common symptoms of exercise-induced asthma. According to the Cleveland Clinic, adults tend to breathe through their mouths while exercising. This means that cooler, drier air is inhaled, and the muscles around your airways are sensitive to this temperature change. Your airways react to the cooler temperature or increased humidity by narrowing, leading to coughing or wheezing.

Chest Tightening

Chest tightness is another symptom of asthma while exercising, brought on by narrowing airways, as well. You may notice your chest start to tighten within eight to 12 minutes of starting exercise, according to Adult and Pediatric Allergy of Northern Virginia. The chest tightness may last as long as five to 10 minutes after you've finished exercising.

Unusual Fatigue

Feeling tired and short of breath after a workout is normal. However, unusual fatigue during or after exercising can be a symptom of asthma. The Mayo Clinic recommends seeing your doctor if the fatigue persists; don't assume you are tired because of lack of endurance or being out of shape.
