Being healthy can mean many different things to different people. Maintaining health means taking care of a person's body, mind and spirit. Living healthy can be a difficult balancing act, though it is important to be aware of the different ways to keep the body, mind and spirit healthy.

Eat Healthy

Start by eating healthy and maintaining a body weight that is ideal for your height and gender. Eat a variety of foods. Choose low fat dairy, lots of fruits and vegetables, whole grains and lean proteins. Stay away from food that is high in fat and decrease intake of red meat and processed foods. Avoid foods high in sugar and low in nutritional value.

Exercise

Participate in a moderate amount of physical exercise for 30 minutes on most days of the week. Exercising can mean walking up stairs, taking a brisk walk on the beach, biking or going to the gym. There are exercise classes and videos that are helpful, as well. People who select enjoyable activities are more inclined to do the exercise regularly.

Regular Doctor Visits

Having an annual physical with a primary doctor is important to make sure that the recommended screenings and tests are done. Females should also visit their gynecologists regularly, since women need special tests and screenings.Visiting the doctor regularly can help to detect a health problem before it is too late.

Manage Stress

Although stress is a normal experience for everyone, it is important to have healthy ways of coping with it. Stress can be relieved by taking a break, taking deep breaths, doing some yoga or mediation or taking a short vacation. Persons under a great deal of stress should consider going to a psychologist or counselor to discuss their problems, since the inability to deal with stress can lead to other health problems or be a sign of mental health issues.

Proper Sleep

In today's world, sometimes sleep is not a priority. Having an adequate amount of sleep is important for people physically, emotionally and mentally. The body and mind need to rest. Most adults need to get about eight hours of sleep a night, while children need more. A doctor may be able to help if falling asleep or sleeping through the night are difficult.

Stay Connected

It is important for people to feel connected to other people, to the world or to something greater. It is important that people maintain healthy relationships and remove themselves from toxic or unhealthy relationships. For some, religion and spirituality is a way to meet the need to feel connected. For others, it means volunteering in the community. People need to find relationships that make them feel connected and happy. They should make sure that this is a part of life that they cultivate and do not neglect.
