Medications for Asthma Without Causing Nervousness

Share this history on :
Asthma is a chronic lung disease characterized by persistent airway inflammation and episodic spasms. At least 22 million American children and adults have asthma, states the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute. Medications for asthma help alleviate airway inflammation and spasms, also known as bronchoconstriction. Nervousness proves a common side effect of many asthma drugs that counteract bronchoconstriction. Several asthma medications---especially those that act primarily as anti-inflammatory agents---do not typically cause nervousness.

Inhaled Beclomethasone

Inhaled beclomethasone is a corticosteroid medication that acts as an anti-inflammatory in the lung airways. Doctors prescribe inhaled beclomethasone for long-term asthma control. By suppressing airway inflammation, the medication reduces the probability of an asthma attack. According to the pharmaceutical information website Drugs.com, nervousness is not a known side effect of inhaled beclomethasone.

Inhaled Fluticasone

Inhaled fluticasone is another man-made corticosteroid medication commonly prescribed for long-term asthma control. The drug acts as an anti-inflammatory agent in the lung airways. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration-approved prescribing information for inhaled fluticasone, nervousness is not among the known side effects of this medication.

Inhaled Mometasone

Doctors frequently prescribe the inhaled, man-made corticosteroid mometasone for long-term asthma control. Similar to other inhaled steroids for asthma, this medication helps prevent asthma attacks but does not alleviate symptoms during an acute asthma attack. The FDA-approved prescribing information for inhaled mometasone does not list nervousness or similar symptoms as potential adverse effects of the medication.

Montelukast

Montelukast inhibits the actions of immune system chemicals known as leukotrienes, which promote inflammation. By blocking the action of leukotrienes, montelukast functions as an anti-inflammatory agent to promote long-term asthma control. Similar to inhaled corticosteroids, montelukast helps prevent asthma attacks but does not alleviate symptoms of an acute asthma attack. According to the FDA-approved prescribing information for montelukast, nervousness is not a known side effect associated with use of this asthma medication.

Zafirlukast

Zafirlukast is another leukotriene inhibitor commonly prescribed by health care professionals to help prevent asthma attacks by reducing inflammation in the lung airways. Leukotriene inhibitors, including zafirlukast and montelukast, are taken by mouth. According to MedlinePlus, nervousness is not among the known side effects associated with use of zafirlukast.

Omalizumab

Omalizumab is an injected medication used for patients with allergic asthma whose disease remains poorly controlled with other asthma medicines. Omalizumab blocks the action of IgE, a protein produced by the immune system that triggers allergic reactions. The FDA-approved prescribing information for omalizumab does not list nervousness or similar symptoms as known side effects of this medication.
